Noodle Bagz Beach Touch Rugby World Championships 2021: Tourno Review
After a year of lockdown with no footy in the books the lads at Noodle HQ were eager to reignite our most competitive event: The Noodle Bagz Beach Touch World Championships. The event has been previously held on Fiesta Island, Crown Point, and Mariners point in Mission Bay. The 2021 location on the soft sand of Ocean Beach matched the footy by bringing us our spiciest scene to date. Have a scroll through our blog below for competition results, Team of the Tournament, and of course some awesome pics.
Thank you to all the lads at SDSU Rugby who helped us set up the vibes. If anyone knows the venmo handle for the kid that single handedly raked the pitch hit us a DM.
The Teams & Results
Armada: The first run at a Noodle Bagz rugby tournament for the local legends. Never have we met a squad so stoked on life. The last place finish gives them the wooden spoon but they sure scored some whopper tries along the way. Defense let them down but hey, that’s footy. Team finish: 10th Team Heartbeat: Tyler Randall
SDSU Black: A tough day at the office for the students. There must have been a frat party the night before. I hope they scored at the after party at least. Team Finish: 9th Team Heartbeat: Andrew Mosqueda
Tropics: They had the best kit so why even worry about how they played. A few stars from the past on this squad for sure including former UFC light heavyweight Jamie Purcell. Team finish: 7/8th Team Heartbeat: Trevor Christiansen
SDSU Red: These college legends got to The Poo semi final losing to Oktoberfest International. A great first run out for the young lads who will look to rebuild for next year. Team Finish: 7/8th Team Heartbeat: Christian St.Clair
Old Aztecs: The historic club is based in Ocean Beach so this tourno was home sand for the boys. As usual the OA’s had a competitive run and may have won the after party. Although the team finished 6th The OA’s unfortunately suffered a DQ for a player breaking rule number 1 of Noodle Bagz Beach Rugby. A full club inquest is surely on the cards for this player. Team Finish: 6th (The Poo runner-up) Team Heartbeat: JD Garcia
Oktoberfest International: The Noodle HQ team bolstered their roster with some units from the San Diego Legion rugby squad. They ultimately fell to a well prepared Bagdaddies team in the pool stages. Looks like we’ll be expensing more trophy purchases cause we certainly ain’t winnin’ them. Team Finish: 5th (The Poo Champions), Team Heartbeat: Pete Malcolm
Eskimo Bros: The lads at Eskimo bro’s travelled down from LA with a point to prove. That point was PARTY! and they proved it. A few big rigs on the squad made them look fierce but it can be tough carrying that amount of muscle tissue through the soft sand. After the tourno they all sat around and copped a beer together on the sand… and they say culture is a buzz word. Team finish: 3/4th Team Heartbeat: Andy Jackson
Buffs: The Buffs came into the tourno having been finalists in Mission Bay two years ago. They threw the footy around gloriously at stages but fitness let them down. To paraphrase their team capain: “Hey it was a good result for a bunch of buffalos” Team Finish: 3/4th Team Heartbeat: Sal DeMartino (A real American Bison)
Bagdaddies: The Bagdaddies have been a staple on the the Noodle Bagz beach rugby scene for a number of seasons. Always looked on as a social squad these lads came into 2021 looking to change that stereotype and made it to the big dance. Top performance from local hunk Bruce Baker returning from an ACL injury. They’ll be back next year hungrier than ever. Team Finish: 2nd Team Heartbeat: Kevin Eaton
Young Selects: What can we say, a seriously well rounded team. From consistency of style to efficiency of subs, these lads have got the X-Factor. For the fourth time in a row it gives us great pleasure to announce the winners of The Noodle Bagz Beach Touch World Championships 2021: The Young Selects. Team finish: 1st Team Heartbeat: PB Jack
